Question: is it hard being a scientist?
Asked by loue to Derek, Daniel, Ian on 24 Jun 2010 in Categories: About. This question was also asked by jessxx.
answered on 23 Jun 2010:
Its not easy as there is a lot of learning to do, even after university, but it is a lot of fun and most people who are scientists are very happy in their jobs 🙂

There must be a glitch in the system, because I could not reply to this question when I first saw it, and thus commented instead (see below).

Becoming a scientist is not hard — it starts by asking questions and exploring the possibilities systematically. Anyone can do that. And if you have done it for a whole pile of questions, at some point you will be regarded (and consider yourself) as a scientist. The hardest thing, then, may well be reconciling this activity with the rest of your life — finding a permanent rather than temporary position, and the time to devote to your family and friends and possibly even some hobbies other than your research…
