I am learning about the way our liver responds to constant abuse by alcohol, fats in our diet, viruses and other insults. This research is enabling us to understand how scars form in the liver which can lead to development of cirrhosis and cancer, these are major causes of death in the UK. By learning how scars form we are discovering treatments for chronic liver disease which we hope will save thousands of people from an unpleasant and early death.

Every day is a school day! Generally, I will constantly be looking things up that I don’t understand to learn more about them. For example, this weekend I was researching human physiology because I want to know how to improve my running performance. I’d read a paper that beetroot juice can improve endurance so had a look for myself. I’ve also become an expert on the human knee since I got an injury last year!

For work, I have to keep up to date with television displays, broadcast technology, video compression etc as part of my day to day job.
