Well if there is a football game on then I like to have a couple of beers and watch the match. If no match is on then I enjoy swimming with my son, although this is not really swimming, more like he spends half an hour jumping in and out of the water and I hang around making sure he doesnt drown himself! I also like watching a bit of TV, House is a good show which I download from iTunes and watch on my laptop. I listen to music, mostly indie (Radiohead, Echo and the Bunnymen and The National) but also a bit of techno (Orbital and Juno Reactor are favourites). This year I have also been doing more in the garden at weekends, been growing my own veg (potatoes, carrots) and herbs – bit disturbing really as this must be a sign I am getting old, gardening is the sort of thing your grandad enjoys!!!!
There is little spare time for scientists in the sense that much of our work involves thinking things through, which generally does not stop when leaving the lab.
I like showing the world to the kid, be this by playing football, observing ants, dancing or reading. I am also engaged with several non-profit projects that have some relation to science (e.g. ways.org) as well as with my band, and I love playing with languages.
One of the things I like doing best is reading a scientific paper. So sometimes I’ll do that on what is supposed to be a day off. I hope that doesn’t sound lame!
I also like playing chess with my children, squash, bike riding, hill walking, and collecting comic books.
I love running. I’m out 4-5 times a week on and off road. I race a lot at all distances and did the London marathon last year. Other than that I’m a rock climber and mountaineer and I play guitar when I have time!
That’s what I like to do. What I actually do seems to be decorating my flat, planning my wedding and going to Tesco like everyone else!!
