I was originally inspired by hearing and reading the work of great scientists like the nobel prize winner Max Perutz who discovered the structure of hemaglobin. But I was inspired to work on liver disease by clinical colleagues who explained how serious this illness is and how there are no treatments available.
It is a combination of the published work by others (in closely or loosely related fields), direct interactions with others (in the lab, at talks and conferences, or via email) and the other parts of life, especially experiences with nature.
I can’t think of a single incident or person who inspired me to become a scientist. As I grew up I just turned to science. However, my dad is a chemical engineer so no doubt something about my upbringing influenced me. I also had a very good science teacher primary school.
My work is not my own idea so it wasn’t inspired by me. It’s a necessary project funded by central government to solve a real problem.
