I play the guitar and have done since I started to teach myself back when I was 15. I spent nearly 10 years in a band called SuperEgo (you can probably find tracks online still, I know there’s a few embarrassing videos on you tube) and we had some small successes like getting tracks on the radio, support slots to touring bands and having our cd in the local HMV! In the end it fell apart because our drummer became an accountant and our bassist became a lawyer.

In my band, I mainly act as a singer, but I also enjoy playing drums and jaw harps. Besides, music perception is one of my research interests.

No. Sometimes when people ask, I say I play keyboards. They ask, ‘Do you mean piano?’ and I say, no, I mean a computer keyboard. A program or an equation can be as elegant as any piece of music, if you know how to listen to it.

I’m envious of my colleagues that can play. I’m told a bunch of them are going to get together and form a jazz band at an upcoming conference next January, and I’m looking forward to it.
