I am going to cheat here and use my answer to the same question which i was asked earlier today 🙂
Oh god what a question to answer. Erm well the official line is that yes of course homework is important otherwise you are missing out on a lot of important work towards your education and your exams. But, I know its sometimes boring, especially when there is something good on TV or you want to hang out with your mates. Best thing is get it over and done with to the best of your ability and then go play!
Yes if it is integrated with the overall learning process. No if not.
What I do not like about homework, though, is that most of it is written just for the moment and ultimately ends up in a waste depository, while the same tasks are given out to the next row of students.
In my view, it would be more useful for students if their homework were to cover new ground more often, and if it would do so in a way that permits reuse. So why not let students blog their homework? For more advanced topics (think term papers or even research theses), one could also envisage incorporating homework with relevant wikis. For university students, I am involved with such an initiative.
Yes, I think it teaches the ability to motivate yourself to do things when not under direct supervision. When you get to university you’ll find most of the course will be homework, or as you’ll come to call it… “work.”
But never miss a social occasion or a sport or anything like that for it. It’s not THAT important. (Don’t tell any teachers I said that)
