A lot! At present I run a research group of roughly 18 scientists and we spend about £15,000 every month. My biggest job is to attract funding to keep this level of research activity going by writing research proposals or grants.

Basically our salaries plus the costs for computers and some conference travel – on the order of £40k per scientist and year. The exact numbers depend much on whether you have finished your PhD or not, and whether you are a professor or not.

I don’t really know to be honest. It’s terrible but we have people who look after our finances and make sure we stay on budget! The biggest cost is us, the staff though.
