Certainly not for financial gain, there are easier ways to make wayyyyyyyyyy more money than I earn. I am doing the research on liver disease because it is a horrible way to die and if i can find a solution that helps reduce suffering then that is worth more than any amount of money I might earn.

It is not easy to get funds for realizing your own research ideas, and almost impossible at the career stage at which I am right now (after my PhD thesis). So the research I am paid for right now was mostly not my idea, though it comes close enough to be of strong interest to me and potentially very useful as an initial step towards the possibility of getting funds to realize research ideas of my own (which, so far, is mostly confined to my spare time).

Once you have qualified with a degree you have to find a job. I wanted to work with science so the opportunities were limited. You can’t just do whatever you like, you need to find someone willing to pay. You also need to earn enough to live and eat. So basically both. I chose a job that would pay me enough money, but also a job that I would enjoy. My project wasn’t my idea, it was someone else’s, but I agree with the idea.
