I work in the Medical School at Newcastle University, we have a large open plan lab, with benches where the experiments are done and offices where we analyse the data and write papers. We have a small area where we can make coffee and most of use eat our lunch at our desks. There is a good pub very near the Medical School but we restrict our vists to Friday evenings, unless it someones birthday or if someone has something else to celebrate like publishing their work in a good scientific journal.

Our group belongs to the University Clinics of University of Jena, in a rented apartment 200m West of the main campus.

Since our work is theoretical, the rooms are stuffed with computers, and we share two printers, a fridge and a coffee machine. Due to earlier uses of the facilities, we also have a sink and mirror in every room.

From my place, I can hear the noise of the daily life on the street below us, including cars, conversations, a small creek, some trees and the birds in them.

I work for the Home Office which is one of the large departments of state based in London. However, my part is a small ‘branch’ of about 200 people. Most are based elsewhere but my site is based in the middle of the countryside, there are about 60 of us in 4 different buildings. There’s loads of space!
