Hmm… good question. I don’t really think of myself as a scientist. I’m Ian, I just happened to do a physics degree and then get work as a scientist. I really enjoy science though, so I guess the best thing about being a scientist is that I get to do the thing I like for a job, specifically learning new things and solving problems.
It also sounds pretty cool when you’re meeting new people and everyone else is a sales manager or an accountant.
The second best thing is that it’s my job to learn new things, and the best thing is that I work with a lot of people that are clever and like what they do. My second favorite thing is to sit down and read a paper or listed to a talk and learn something new about how the world works, or about how you could engineer something in a better way. My favorite thing is to sit down with my students and co-workers and come up with a new idea ourselves.
For instance, a couple of years ago we organized a workshop in Ullapool, in the Highlands, and came up with a new way to structure Internet programs, which is now used in commercial products from two different firms. I remember us all sitting around a pad, working out why one technique that was widely used (and which I helped invent) didn’t do quite the right thing, and that was the first step to working out what the right thing would be. I also remember heading up Stac Pollaidh, which was a great bonding experience for the group. Good ideas and good times go hand in hand.
